ICD 10 for Healthcare Providers

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced a final rule that will facilitate the United States' ongoing transition to an electronic health care environment through adoption of a new generation of diagnosis and procedure codes and updated standards for electronic health care and pharmacy transactions. The rule adopts medical data code sets as Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) standards for use in reporting diagnoses and inpatient hospital procedures in health care transactions (ICD-10 final rule). The standards adopted under this final rule will replace the ICD-9-CM code sets, developed nearly 30 years ago, with greatly expanded ICD-10 code sets.
The mandatory migration to ICD-10 by October 1st, 2013 is anticipated to impact hospital and physician organizations systemically. For example, it is prudent to expect that there will be impacts in the following areas:

  • Education and training for providers, medical coders and other healthcare professionals
  • Changes to business process internal to provider operations and between provider and payers
  • Increased clinical documentation requirements
  • Billing and cash flow impactsInformation technology systems

The migration to ICD-10 will have a systemic impact on hospital and provider organizations affecting business and clinical process, financial performance and IT systems challenges. Many in the industry view the ICD-10 conversion as the perfect storm in healthcare with the potential to cause unprecedented disruption to payers and providers alike.

HCL Technologies has focused on creating solutions to address the various challenges around ICD 10 transformation to help hospitals and providers achieve success in meeting ICD-10 requirements and thereby improve financial performance.
