KLAS: Global EMR Adoption Rates Continue to Grow

Providers around the globe are continuing to adopt electronic medical record (EMR) technology at a rapid rate, with Cerner and InterSystems standing out as the top-performing fully rated multiregional vendors, according to a new report from Orem, Utah-based KLAS Research.

The report, “Global EMR Performance 2015,” highlights vendor performance by region, and shows that Epic performs best in large organizations across the globe, with providers citing strong implementations, functionality and support. What’s more, provider surveys and commentary show that Cerner performs very well in Europe and the Middle East, while InterSystems performs well in Asia/Oceania and the Middle East. As proof that providers can be more successful when working directly with vendors, UK providers report deeper product adoption, better support, and improved Cerner performance attributed to direct contracts post NPfIT (National Project for Information Technology). Until vendors are more prescriptive in government contracts, providers likely won’t fully benefit from what these platforms offer, KLAS found.

Indeed, in some parts of the world, vendors’ statewide contracts are hampering provider/vendor relationships, according to the report.  KLAS found that providers are eager to leverage all of an EMR's functionality but are often unable to due to limiting contracts.  Specifically, the report found, statewide contracts in Australia have caused difficulties for Allscripts and Cerner clients.

"Global EMR adoption rates vary by region depending on available resources, government contracts and a number of other factors, and that has a direct impact on vendor performance," Jeremy Goff, KLAS research director, said in a statement. "As we continue to monitor the market and talk to providers, we find that multiregional vendors perform well in some regions, but none clearly outperforms their competition everywhere."
