On the heels of a data breach that affected 513 patients, the August, Ga.-based, 478-bed Georgia Health Sciences University (GHSU) has announced Charles Enicks as its new CIO. Enicks has 35 years of experience and will assume duties on May 1, 2012.

Prior to joining GHSU, Enicks was CIO at University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, where he led the IT function for five related schools, five hospitals and a 550-physician multispecialty practice. He also has served as CIO at numerous other academically affiliated healthcare organizations, including Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in Pa., University of Alabama at Birmingham Health System in Ala., and Emory Healthcare in Atlanta, Ga.

GHSU attributes the hiring of Enicks to wanting an experienced hand to lead them, following the merger of the university with its health system. The recent breach at GHSU occurred when there was a theft of a laptop computer that may have contained some of the patients’ personal information.
