Another top technology executive has resigned from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) health system. Last week Healthcare Informatics reported that Dan Drawbaugh had left the chief information officer position. Rebecca Kaul, chief innovation officer and president of the UPMC Technology Development Center (TDC), also recently resigned.

Wendy Zellner, UPMC’s director of media relations, confirmed a report in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that Kaul, the daughter of UPMC CEO Jeffrey Romoff, had left the organization. She said Rasu Shrestha, M.D., has been named chief innovation officer and interim president of the TDC. Dr. Shrestha previously served as vice president of medical information technology and medical director of interoperability and imaging informatics at UPMC. He serves as the chair of the Informatics Scientific Program Committee at the Radiological Society of North America.

Kaul, who joined UPMC in 2009, helped establish the TDC to assess new and existing technology investment opportunities and to pursue UPMC’s vision for healthcare innovation. It has grown to more than 170 employees, and has worked in partnership with vendors such as Nuance, Optum, and Alcatel-Lucent.

Ed McCallister, formerly senior vice president, enterprise applications & business services, Information Services Division, has been named UPMC’s interim CIO.
