As part of its vision of establishing a model for pediatric care, Florida Hospital (Orlando, Fla.) is upgrading IT services at its pediatric facility, which is being renamed the Disney Children’s Hospital at Florida Hospital.

The hospital’s emergency department will be the first in the country to feature Ambient Experience imaging solutions from Philips (Amsterdam). Additionally, the Bethesda, Md.-based GetWellNetwork Patient-Life System will be installed in rooms, enabling patients to play video games, watch movies, browse the Internet and view educational videos from the bedside, says the organization.

Other new additions include pediatric physicians specializing in minimally invasive surgery, and the appointment of former U.S. Surgeon General Antonia Novello, M.D., as vice president of Women and Children Health and Policy Affairs. Construction of the seven-story, 200-bed hospital is expected to be completed by 2010.
