One of the founders of the Ann Arbor, Mich.-based College of Health Information Management Executives (CHIME), Rich Correll, has announced plans to retire.
Correll helped form CHIME in 1992 with John Glaser, Ph.D., who currently works at Cerner through its acquisition of Siemens health IT division. Correll led CHIME for more than two decades, as it became one of the largest health IT professional associations in the industry. In 2013, he was moved to the role of chief operating officer and senior strategic advisor following the appointment of current CHIME CEO, Russell P. Branzell.
"My years serving CHIME have been a privilege and the most rewarding of my career," Correll said in a statement. "With the indispensable support of our members, board and staff, the organization has become a recognized leader and advocate for the CIO role and the effective use of information management to improve patient care quality and safety.
Before CHIME, Correll worked for several healthcare organizations in a technology-related role, including helping lead the install of the world's first medical information system at El Camino Hospital in California. In the mid 1980s, he was the inaugural President of the Center for Healthcare Information Management (CHIM), which was established within the American Hospital Association.
"Rich's contributions and accomplishments throughout his entire career have been instrumental in establishing IT leadership in the healthcare industry," Branzell, CHIME CEO and President, said in a statement. "I've known Rich and have been involved with CHIME for over 17 years, and his vision and guidance have shaped the careers of countless industry CIOs. His presence will be greatly missed."
