The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) has released data for the health IT vendors most used by providers participating in the Medicare EHR Incentive Program.

As of June 2016, 175 certified health IT vendors supply certified health IT to the nearly 4,500 non-federal acute care hospitals, including critical access hospitals, participating in the Medicare EHR Incentive Program, according to ONC. The agency defines certified health IT as meeting the needs of the technological capability, functionality, and security requirements adopted by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

Of those 4,474 hospitals, 95 percent have 2014 certified edition technology. Cerner, MEDITECH, Epic Systems, Evident, McKesson, and MEDHOST supply 2014 certified technology to 92 percent of hospitals that have reported 2014 edition technology. Including Allscripts, QuadraMed, Prognosis, and athenahealth, these 10 vendors altogether supply 2014 technology to 98 percent of hospitals, the data revealed.

Meanwhile, on the ambulatory side, as of June 2016, 632 vendors supply certified health IT to more than 337,000 ambulatory primary care physicians, medical and surgical specialists, podiatrists, optometrists, dentists, and chiropractors participating in the Medicare EHR Incentive Program. And, of those 337,432 providers, over 75 percent have 2014 certified edition technology.

Epic Systems, Allscripts, eClinicalWorks, athenahealth, and NextGen Healthcare supply 2014 certified technology to 60 percent of all providers that have reported 2014 edition technology. Epic Systems alone supplies 2014 certified technology to 30 percent of all those providers, and 2011 and/or 2014 certified technology to 25 percent of all providers, per the ONC data.
